Internal Dialogue our endless conversations

The photo right could represent a second of dialogues we have with ourselves. We are constantly talking with ourselves. Day and night, year after year, our whole lives we keep our heads busy deliberating, evaluating, judging, contemplating, considering, denying, asking and we can't seem to stop it. Most people aren't even aware of their internal dialogues. Having endless conversations with yourself is just part of being human would most people say. But this constant dialogue has its price. It's keeping us far away from our spiritual being. And if we keep on talking we may never get in touch with it. We all have the capability to stop it. We just never learned it. We don't understand what it means to stop it. It is not the same as meditating an hour a day and achieving a quiet mind for half an hour. I'm talking about stopping it completely and stopping it by will. When you really stop your internal dialogue there is nothing left of you. Your ego, your personality, your habits and routines, your total view of the world will be gone. The only thing left is awareness in its purest form. There are techniques to achieve such a state but you will need loads of energy to do it.

Something about "Intent"

Before giving some techniques for stopping our internal dialogue I'd like to explain something about a force that the ancient Mexican shamans used for everything they did. They called this force "Intent" but has nothing to do with the word intention as we know it. The shamans saw that this force is an independent force and that everything in the entire cosmos including us is attached to it. Here is a quote from Don Juan Matus, the master sorcerer in the books of Castaneda: “Intent is not a thought, or an object, or a wish. Intent is what can make a man succeed when his thoughts tell him that he is defeated. It operates in spite of the warrior’s indulgence. Intent is what makes him invulnerable. Intent is what sends a shaman through a wall, through space, to infinity.” There is really no other explanation for this force. The only thing we can do is acquiesce to the designs of intent. When in heightened states of awareness those shamans saw that when they moved their bodies in certain ways their link with intent became altered. They started to study and exercise these movements and called them Magical Passes. They exercised those passes in normal states of awareness and discover astonishing results. After doing those magical passes they were able to shut off their internal dialogue much easier.

Magical Passes

So what are these Magical Passes exactly? Magical Passes are bodily movements discovered in dreaming states by the ancient shamans of Mexico. While executing them in daily life practitioners can experience tremendous results on their vigor, well-being and awareness. These Magical Passes can bring the mood of dreaming or the mood of the warrior into our daily actions and can give us the energy to that is needed to listen to the force of intent. This book contains a lot of passes and can be considered as the fundamentals. The passes are written in an easy to understand way and are accompanied with photo's. If you want to read more about the Magical Passes, I've written a Hub in depth about this.

Learn, Execute, Memorize and Silence will come to you

Executing these magical passes will give you a tremendous advance in shutting off your internal dialogue. The magical passes can be executed in single-form or in long-form. The long-forms as written in the book were designed to tax the kinesthetic memory which puts pressure on the internal dialogue and helps to create moments of true inner silence. Of course other forms of bodily movements like Tai Chi, Qigong, Aikido, Yoga put also pressure on our kinesthetic memory and are really powerful art forms. But, and I say this from personal experiences, the complexity, the effectiveness and the amount of pressure on my internal dialogue from the Magical Passes I didn't find in any of those other arts. I'm not saying that they're not good. In fact, they are! Personally, before I started exercising the Magical Passes I studied Qigong and I still use movements from it. If I had all the time in the world I would study them all. But I'm so addicted to the Passes so I made my choice. But in the end you also can achieve silence with any of those other art forms.

Other techniques...

There are other techniques to shut off your internal dialogue. One technique is dreaming. But the key is that you have to be aware that you're dreaming. There are many people already doing this but the most can't. There are however techniques to learn it. But you can only shut off your internal dialogue if you master it. I say this because there is a difference in the dreaming I am talking about and lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming is just being lucid in your dreams and that's it. You can become a very experienced lucid dreamer and you can change aspects of your dream but it's still plain lucid dreaming. But the dreaming that I am talking about goes further and can't go without the extensive training of your awareness in both a waking state and a sleeping state. But first of all you have to become aware that you're dreaming while dreaming. If your really interested in dreaming, here I wrote about it in depth.

In a waking state look at your hands, turn them around a couple of times and ask yourself "am I dreaming?". Do this every day a couple of times. This is an example. You can also use something else. I play classical guitar and often see my hands crossing the fretboard. That's when I ask myself if I'm dreaming. It's good to do it with something you do a lot. Maybe you write articles the whole day, so while typing ask yourself if your dreaming.
If you do this consistently there will be a day that your dreaming that image. You probably won't be fully aware the first time because you aren't trained yet. But a day will come that you'll be fully aware.
The reason why I used examples with hands is just because lots of people have good experiences with it but you choose whatever you like and then stick to it.

Very interesting hub. I'm painfully aware of my internal dialogue and how it's kept me from progress in my own life. Thanks for sharing these tips on how to achieve that elusive state of "quietness" and self-awareness.

Wow Energy Advisor,

You had me with your intro! I have to say, I'm excited to try to free my mind up of all my cluttered thoughts, but I'm sure it will be challenging for me with my job.

I used to think I could lucid dream, but it turned out I was just awake and thinking about my dream, but still thinking I was dreaming. :-)

Thanks ACSutliff.

I know the feeling of being awake and thinking that I'm dreaming. Sometimes when I practice inner silence and open my eyes after an hour or two I really have to do some reality checks as my perception is very clear and vivid like in dreaming state. If you can lucid dream and practice a lot of inner silence in waking state you'll realize that the two states are very alike. For obsessive people this could be quite dangerous too. Thanks for stopping by ;-)
